One of École du Nord's priorities is excellence in languages.
At EDN, we firmly believe a multilingual education prepares our students for their future.

Many and varied, the cognitive benefits of a multilingual education are important for students to develop greater concentration, problem-solving skills, mental gymnastics and multi-tasking skills, amongst others.

What’s more, at EDN we use languages to help students understand other cultures, adopt new points of view and navigate the world around them.

Mauritius is a multilingual country:
– English is the most commonly used language in admin and commerce
– Creole is the language most commonly spoken amongst citizens
– Followed by French, which is often written and spoken fluently

Bearing in mind Mauritius’ specific characteristics as well as the challenges of tomorrow’s citizens, the teaching of English as a foreign language at École du Nord is a priority at all levels, as from kindergarten.

We have also developed several language programmes to further the skills, aptitudes and interests of each student.

Admission to the courses and options offered by EDN are subject to academic approval and, in some cases, to a British Council placement test.

Language classes in Primary school

Bilingual teaching in English and French is offered to all kindergarten and primary school students.

Learning languages is an excellent way to raise awareness of differences as well as develop curiosity and a desire to communicate.

In Kindergarten, students benefit from a progressive immersion in English, with fun activities centered around everyday life.

Primary school

From Year 2 to 6, students develop essential behavioural skills enabling them to learn a foreign language: curiosity, listening, attention, memory and self-confidence.

EDN students are encouraged to speak English without reluctance or fear of making mistakes. They learn to communicate in English, to understand and express themselves orally and in writing, and to converse with others. English, therefore, becomes a means to discover other cultures.

In primary school, English as a foreign language is taught between 4.5 hours and 5.5 hours per week. It is divided between English Culture and Literature, with an additional 2.5 hours of EMILE per week.

EMILE (Enseignement de Matières par l’Intégration d’une Langue Étrangère): 2.5 hours of maths, history, music, PE (or other subjects from the curriculum) in English.

Language Classes in Middle school

We offer three different programmes: classic, European Section in English (European Languages and Cultures – LCE) and British International Section (SI).

Classic: The French national curriculum.
Teaching is mainly in French, with 4 hours of English per week, 3 hours of a third language (LVB) (German or Spanish) and 2 to 3 hours of Latin.

The classic programme prepares students for the Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB) at the end of Year 10.

European Section (English): The French curriculum with
reinforced English language teaching, offering an additional 2 hours of English per week in European Language and Civilisation – i.e. a total of 6 hours of English per week

The European Section prepares students for the Diplôme National du Brevet Option Internationale at the end of Year 10, as well as the OIB (Option Internationale du Baccalauréat) in high school.

British International Section (British English): The French curriculum with enhanced English language teaching, offering 10 hours of English per week, spanning the following subjects: 8 hours of literature and 2 hours of history and geography – i.e. a total of 14 hours of English per week.

The International British Section prepares students for the DNBI at the end of Year 10, the IGCSE exams at the end of Year 11 and the OIB at the end of Year 13.

Language Support Classes

Beginners in French: Language support classes in small groups spanning different levels, promoting the learning of English as a foreign language from Year 2 onwards.

EDN has launched the FRANGIPANE / I SPEAK FRENCH programme, offering English-speaking students a tailored curriculum adapted to their needs. French teachers guide English-speaking students so they can quickly learn the basics of the French language, drawing on their existing knowledge and linguistic skills.
