Message from the Head of School
Joining École du Nord means becoming part of a school community of over 1,485 students representing more than 20 nationalities. More and more non-French-speaking families are enrolling in the largest global network of schools: the Agence pour l’Enseignement Français à l’Étranger (AEFE).
Backed by strong pedagogical expertise and set within a privileged environment, École du Nord continues to grow. Its teachers—cornerstones of the school’s know-how—receive training every year to remain at the forefront of innovation in both knowledge transmission and personal development.
Our non-profit, association-based structure has proven its ability to deliver the island’s highest quality schooling and extracurricular services at the best value. These values of solidarity are rooted in our membership in a worldwide school network designed by France as an exceptional tool for cultural cooperation. In Mauritius, under the coordination of the French Embassy, five French schools work collectively to fulfil this ambition, offering a complete education from Petite Section (starting at age 3) to the Baccalauréat.
École du Nord carries this mission in the north of the island and has added new strengths to support its development. Since the start of the 2022 school year, our British international section has extended across all primary levels, building on the programme first launched in collège in 2018. We have also laid the foundations for a junior sports pathway aligned with the opportunities available at Lycée des Mascareignes. In addition, we are continuously expanding our extracurricular offering to ensure that afternoon classes are followed by a wide range of workshops supporting artistic, athletic, and cultural development for all pupils.
It is in this spirit of collaboration and commitment that all staff approach their work and will continue to do so for the benefit of our vibrant school community. Now more than ever—at a time when artificial intelligence prompts questions about the role of humans in many creative and productive processes—the relationship forged within the classroom, sometimes deemed obsolete, stands out as the most powerful medium of what Hannah Arendt called the “continuity of the world.”
Alongside our focus on excellence and multilingualism, we have developed several initiatives to support non-French-speaking families. Among them, the “Frangipane Pathway,” an accelerated and tailored French language programme, has already shown remarkable success. This growing appeal is nurtured through the steadfast commitment of our parents’ association, the ADN, and our governing board, the AEN, both deeply engaged in supporting our strategic ambition to open up to new communities.
Choosing École du Nord means choosing a French education that is multilingual, culturally rich, and grounded in the skills needed to understand and navigate the world of tomorrow. It means entering a place where wellbeing, kindness, and excellence go hand in hand—within the largest global network of private schools.
Jean Noël Fiard, Head of School
